A show that sold out almost as soon as it was announced, with fans lined up around the block, eager to witness Finn Wolfhard’s first solo show in Baltimore. Wolfhard is forging his own unique musical identity on his debut solo tour supporting his new album Happy Birthday. The Ottobar’s cozy interior was packed shoulder-to-shoulder by showtime, buzzing with an anticipation rarely seen for a debut tour.

The Chicago trio The Slaps opened the night with a brief set of indie tunes. The Slaps absolutely complemented Wolfhard’s sound and got the crowd buzzing with anticipation for the headliner.

When Wolfhard and his band finally stepped up on stage, the crowd erupted in deafening screams. They launched straight into “Choose the latter,” a sort of grunge-pop mix single from Happy Birthday, setting an upbeat tone. Without missing a beat, Wolfhard barreled into his set, going straight into “Objection,” one of my favorites from the set.

The setlist leaned heavily on Happy Birthday, but still shed some light on other songs. For example, a nod to his roots with his band The Aubreys’ “No Offerings,” and a cover of “Another Girl, Another Planet.” His longtime fans appreciated the throwbacks connecting his past and present work.

As the main set ended (much to the chagrin of the excited crowd), Wolfhard returned alone with an acoustic guitar for a gentler rendition of “Happy Birthday.” The room got quiet as we were serenaded by the soothing acoustic sounds. Singing, “Happy birthday, what do you want,” with a fan shouting, “You!” Fittingly enough, the next song on the set was “You,” and finishing the set off with an explosive end, “Crown.” The smile on Finn’s face was one of pure exhilaration and gratitude.

Throughout the night, Wolfhard crafted a performance that paid homage to classic indie rock influences while simultaneously carving his own path in the genre. His vocals, though not conventionally polished and produced, added a level of uniqueness that carried emotion and confidence. As far as being a music performer on stage, Wolfhard balanced an era of professionalism with a personal touch, formal and full of heart. If this show was any indication, he has absolutely carved a place for himself in the music world far beyond his Hollywood origins.
