On a Monday, can you see her? Absolutely, and for three residency-style nights at Massey Hall, you can spend an evening with PinkPantheress for her only stop in Canada. Having performed at Danforth Music Hall back in 2024 for her Capable of Love Tour, she is back at it again, celebrating her latest mixtape, Fancy That, with the company of her band The Pinkettes (DJ Joe and backup dancers Ava and Nerita). Together, they commanded the red sea of plaid and made us fancy some more of her most fully realized, personalized performance to date.

PinkPantheress Night 1 Featuring Line 2

Despite her hopping the pond, flying stateside from her New York residency, to Ontario, she is no stranger to Toronto, and it didn’t take long to find her home with us. Funnily enough, she even found acceptance at border control when her officer, who didn’t recognize her, lit up when he found out that she was performing at the legendary Massey Hall. With such praise from strangers and fans alike, she also reciprocated her love for Toronto when she filmed a teaser for “Illegal” on TTC’s Line 2 earlier this year. When I first saw that clip, I thought it was the Tube from her hometown, but my friends and I did a double-take and noticed her posing behind Line 2’s subway map and its old-school subway car.

I still wonder when she recorded this video. When was the last time she was here if it wasn’t for her Capable of Love tour stop? Is she hitting poses in the subway as I’m writing this article? I guess I’ll never know, but at least I know now that she’s as big of a fan of us as we are of her.

Dramatic Stage Reveal

She started her set with “Stateside”, but the curtains that covered the entire stage malfunctioned and didn’t drop before she started singing. Despite this, she still performed her choreography for the mezzanine and balcony folks to the sides while the crew hurried to take down the drapery manually. Fans eagerly waited with humorous understanding, and the only reason for their red faces was the stage lights heating up the crowd. The slow-burning tease of the stage was brimming with anticipation from fans. When the stage finally revealed itself at the end of the song, the crowd erupted in cheers for PinkPantheress, who was apologetic for the funny hiccup.

The dramatic curtain drop revealed her minimalist yet glamorous stage layout, which featured tall platforms on both sides: one for her drummer, Blake, and the other for DJ Joe. In the center, wide stair platforms guided our eyes to a giant square screen adorned with multimedia visuals complementing the larger red plaid backdrop. With lights ornamenting every side and level of the stage, her show was a twenty-three-song spectacle spanning her past four years of bite-sized deep cuts, with visuals completing the journey that led us to this evening. There was another happy accident that happened later in her set when Blake’s phone started ringing, suspiciously to the chiptune of “Illegal”. In a fleeting moment of silence after picking up his phone, PinkPantheress flashed us with a pose, mic in hand, as she surprised us with the full version of “Illegal.”

Why is it all Emotional Tonight?

Her evolved stage presence matched her energetic songs. Gone are the days of her doing a one-two step while clutching her purse. Now, she has addictingly sassy choreography in her back pocket featuring dance breaks with The Pinkettes and DJ Joe alike. She interacted with the crowd several times. One time to give someone a handshake à la “Illegal”, and another time to snatch someone’s wig they proudly taunted her with. She and the Pinkettes were even on the search for her “Romeo”, and when they brought a lucky candidate on stage, he had to prove himself through an unexpected and out of pocket dance break. Despite him checking off all of the crowd’s boxes, PinkPantheress wasn’t too impressed and deemed that the “Boy’s a Liar.” She respectfully broke his heart, then broke into her respective song, leaving the crowd in melodramatic shambles. With her dash of entertainment throughout and between her songs, PinkPantheress proved her growth as a performer and an artist.

Province-Side

I’ve been a huge fan of hers for some time now (so much so that I extracted her Dolby Atmos background vocals for her album Heaven Knows), and seeing her artistic growth in all aspects coming together this evening was endlessly wholesome. Not to put on my pink-coloured tin foil hat, but it is interesting to witness her narrative from her first mixtape, ToHellWithIt, to her antithetically titled album, HeavenKnows, where the cover just so happened to feature a staircase leading to a red corridor. Perhaps she had been teasing her current red-themed mixtape all along, but cohesive coincidence aside, seeing her conceptual build-up throughout these years and showcasing her talent tonight was an emotional full-circle moment.

PinkPantheress and The Pinkettes gave Massey Hall’s night 1 crowd a unique, personalized evening, showcasing her artistic journey over the past few years. And this is only the beginning of her journey throughout her three-day Canada residency and beyond. She will perform again on Wednesday, October 29th, and Thursday, October 30th, before returning to the stateside, so be sure to catch up with her while she’s province-side!
